NASA recently approved Advanced Stirling Radioisotope Generators (ASRGs) for use on the Discovery missions. The new radioisotope generators are not unlike earlier generation models that powered Cassini and other spacecraft by using the heat from radioactive decay, rather than actually using nuclear fission.
