There are fewer letters than phonemes in the English language, which means that there are more sounds which you can produce than there are letters to write them. Additionally, consonants can give you more information about the sound (whether it is nasal, aspirated, dental, etc.) than vowels (a, e, i, o, i, y) which don't have that many characteristics.
