Not sure which war you're talking about, but sometimes the outcome of a war is worth the cost. Think about the Second World War for example. While many people have died in this war, if it would not be fought by the allies, Nazi ideology would probably be still omnipresent in Germany and would treat people who are not thought of as Aryan as not worthy and would possibly even perform genocide on them.
