As a source, why might a historian question the reliability of the tripitaka as a historical document?

It isn't a historical document, it's a religious document. Since oceans aren't mentioned in the Rg Veda, it's thought that the authors came from some place far from the sea. The language can be used to date other texts, but there's precious little history in it.. Wonderful poetry, though.
