5x+y=-8  so y = -5x - 8
4x-2y=-40

substitute
y = -5x - 8 into 4x-2y=-40
4x- 2y = -40
4x-2( -5x - 8) = -40
4x + 10x + 16 = -40
14x = -56
    x = -4

y = -5x - 8
y = -5(-4) - 8
y = 20 - 8
y = 12

answer
x = -4 and y = 12
