The battle of antietam was one of the bloodiest battles fought during the Civil War. Although the Union won the conflict, both the North and the South experienced incredible causalities. Consequently, the losses from the battle, as well as the Union victory enabled President Lincoln push forward with the Emancipation Proclamation.
