-2x + y + 6 = 0
2x + y - 8 = 0
-------------------------add the equations together
           2y - 2 = 0    add 2 to both sides
           2y = 2        divide both sides by 2
             y =1

Plug 1 back into either equation and solve for x.
-2x + y + 6 = 0
-2x + 1 + 6 = 0
-2x + 7 = 0  subtract 7 from both sides
-2x = -7       divide both sides by -2
x = 7/2 or x = 3.5
