Dactylic hexameter was a popular style of writing during Homer's time. It is a style that is rather elevated, and contributes to the epicness of his poem The Odyssey. Hexameter means that there are 12 syllables in one line (meter contains two syllables, and hexa means 6), whereas a dactyl consists of three syllables (the first one is stressed, the following two are unstressed).
