The Byzantine Empire had an important cultural legacy, both on the Orthodox Church and on the revival of Greek and Roman studies, which influenced the Renaissance.
Although it eventually declined to a small area around Constantinople, the Byzantine Empire's most important legacy was preserving the traditions of Greece and Rome for around 1,000 years after the fall of the western half of the Roman Empire.
