In Ancient Greek times, the Spartans had no understanding of human rights like we do today. In that time only a select few were truly considered to be completely free and have rights. Everyone else fell into one of three categories whose rights were predefined from a very young age for the rest of their lives. These categories were, Spartiates, Helots (serfs/slaves), and the Perioeci. Each of which had different roles and responsibilities with very varying levels of respect.
