If you're trying to solve for y
-2y = 8
Divide -2 to both sides
[tex] \frac{-2y}{-2} = \frac{8}{-2} [/tex]
Cancel out the -2 on the left, Divide the -2 to the 8 on the right so
y = -4

Divide each side of the equation by -2. (Or multiply each side by -1/2 ... same thing.) Then step quickly to one side, to avoid being struck as the solution jumps off of the paper at you.
