I believe you are referring to the story "The Lady, or the Tiger?" by Frank R. Stockton. In this story, the princess did indeed hold the power of life or death over her lover. She had the choice of either letting him live and seeing him love another woman, or letting him die and sparing herself the pain of letting him go. Hope this helps.
