 Atticus talks to the children about being proud of their superior heritage, but he just scares them because he doesn’t usually talk to them in that way.
Scout ends up crying on his lap, and Atticus tells them both to forget it.

Scout is crying because she realizes that people wanted to kill her father. This only sinks into her later. In the heat of the moment, she wasn't thinking of this.
