Dependent variable and independent variable

The independent variable is the number you put into a function.
The function has no control or influence on it.  It's whatever YOU
decided to put in.  It's completely independent of the function.

The value that results from what you put in is the dependent variable.
It depends on  => what you put in, and  => what the function does
with that.
