On September 18, 1850, the United States Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act.

The Fugitive Slave Act made it law that all captured slaves, wherever they may be, be returned to their "masters"

This caused many in the North to  vehemently object as slaves were caught in major northern cities like Boston and Buffalo.
