Adams won three more electoral votes than Jefferson. According to Electoral College rules in 1796, the second-place candidate became the vice president. So, Adams took the office of president, and Jefferson became the vice president. Jefferson’s election gave the Anti-Federalist Party greater power in the federal government.

It was the first true two-party election.
