Carson decided to begin "a fable for tomorrow" with representing characters and events through imagery instead of introducing them as it usually happens when employ an exposition because he wanted to put a reader right in the spot where the events take place. Imagery is used to represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses which means that author creates detailed description that makes reader understand  and get through the story better.
