What causes a supergiant to turn into a supernova?

Here is the process:

As a supernova compresses, it's core tempatures become super hot. Fusion causes larger elements to form in it's core to form heavier and heavier elements like iron. Because iron can not release energy, the core violently collapses, sending waves to the outer layers of the stars and creating a bright explosion of light called a supernova. Hope this helps!
